Samsung’s next foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold 2, will also be the second device of its kind to use Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). At the same time, Samsung is partnering with gorilla glass maker Corning to lower the price of this important foldable smartphone component.
While Corning’s solution is still in the development phase, sources assume that the bendable glass will be ready in time for mobile devices in 2021. Currently, Samsung uses the rather expensive variant of the German manufacturer Schott .
Samsung Display and Corning have already agreed on terms for a new UTG supply chain in the United States. While it remains to be seen how the Corning solution behaves compared to the Schott solution, this should result in lower UTG production costs.
Anyway, it now seems that Samsung will stay with UTG at least for another generation of foldable smartphones. The manufacturer still had his doubts, especially regarding the price and the service life.
The Samsung Galaxy Gold 2 is to be presented at an online UNPACKED event on August 5 .
